Woolwich town centre sees new post office open

A new post office has opened in Woolwich town centre on Powis Street located next door to CEX in the former Victorious photo studio seen above.

It’s the first time a post office has been present in the town centre since WH Smith closed down, and this marks the first dedicated post office since the closure and demolition of the town’s main office facing General Gordon Square.

Former post office located within WH Smith

In a timely coincidence the new post office opened the very same week construction started on a 15-storey block on the old Victorian post office building’s location.

I covered that last week. Plans have been around for about 20 years and the old post office was closed and demolished around 15 years ago.

Work now underway at former post office site

Between demolition and construction it was an open space in front of the large Tesco supermarket.

Only now is that long-planned development getting underway on site.

As for the new post office its located to the western end of Powis Street passed Iceland and towards Hare Street.

It’s open seven days a week. Between Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5:30pm and 11am to 4pm on a Sunday.

Greenwich Council helped with fitting out costs.

In a joint statement Manish Garg, Proprietor of Woowich Post Office, Stationers and Gift Shop, and his wife Kriti Garg said: “We know people are excited about the Post Office re-opening Powis Street. Our team is working hard to meet their expectations and provide the excellent service they deserve.”

  • Having a new post office in Woolwich is excellent news and very much welcomed..
Far to many bank and post office branches have been allowed to close.
People still need fave to face services as not everyone is able to use online banking or the Internet or own devices that allow them to access online services including the elderly disabled and people who do not know how to use modern technology.
