Final weekend of Canary Wharf Winter Lights festival

If you’re at a loss of things to do on the next two dark January nights then this weekend is the last chance to see the Winter Lights festival at Canary Wharf.

It’s on between 5pm and 10pm today and tomorrow with 16 light installations across the area including the top floor of Canary Wharf Elizabeth line station.

For those in south east London it’s a quick ten minute ride from Abbey Wood to Canary Wharf or six from Woolwich.

The DLR will take you straight to Canary Wharf from Greenwich and Lewisham (yes for once no engineering works for the news trains) and the tube of course gets there in a couple of minutes from North Greenwich station.

I popped along last week and had a decent time wandering about. I wouldn’t say anything was massively impressive this year but it’s always an enjoyable night (though it can get busy).

And the thing about the area is even when somewhere that isn’t part of the actual festival, you still see eye catching views all over.

What strikes me again is just how accessible this area now is from across London and for me, from south east London. It’s vastly changed in what seems a few short years with the tube, then the DLR and now the Liz line. Though it’s now 17 years since the Woolwich Arsenal DLR extension opened. Does that make you feel old? It does me.

Upon it opening it became a quick jaunt by heading to poplar then walking down.

In years to come that link will be made easier when North Quay opens. But for now it’s still easy enough.
