Woolwich Waves leisure centre signage submitted in advance of opening

Signage to adorn the new Woolwich leisure centre has been submitted in advance of an expected opening next month.

The new building will replace the existing Waterfront centre and has two big blank expanses on both its northern and western frontages.

These plans reveal what signage will appear facing General Gordon Square.

Sign facing General Gordon Square

It’s pretty subtle and tasteful. However there is no mention of a sign on the big expanse facing down Woolwich new Road.

It looks when on approach some signage should be there, but it’s not in this application. Of course maybe something has already gone up from another application as I havn’t been passed recently.

Looking towards centre from Royal Arsenal having left station

If not it appears an odd omission not to advertise the new centre with visible signage visible from the Arsenal and those leaving or using Woolwich station.

This application does include this façade but only includes small window signs at street level. The photo above doesn’t really get across how the blank façade is crying out for something.

It needn’t be garish. Something akin to what is proposed facing General Gordon Square would work well, and particularly when illuminated at night. Without it the view down to the centre is pretty drab with a big, blank expanse on offer.

After all, Woolwich Works got much criticism from councillors themselves about poor outside signage.

Opening

The new centre is expected to open next month with the Waterfront closed and demolished.

Bull Tavern will be demolished

Last week revised plans to demolish the Bull Tavern pub was approved behind the new centre, with a housing development set to rise on site.

A total of 557 homes will be built (up from 482) with a big jump in social housing from ten per cent to 34 per cent.

  • Doesn’t surprise me that bricks are stolen from a cemetery wall. We have shop lifters. Carbage dumping. Half hearted Street swearing. Even in my rd the leaves that are falling from Marion park they do not sweep both sides of the road. So we get them in our gardens. It’s so sad. We pay our council tax. And so not get the benifit . But they still charge us. I physically go out and clear up leaves that very rarely get done buy our council. Bloody useless. I did ask a road sweeper why he only swept houses side of the road. He said its down to the park to sweep the park fence side. When did that change. We were not notified. So tenants do it. Why do we pay community charge even our main roads are being turned into rivers because the drains are blocked with leaves.

    • Well said Brenda Muskin Also when do you ever see a drain being cleaned by the specialist gully lorries where they auck muck out of the drains. Years ago it to used to be a few times a year. Now it is never.

On a separate note I am looking forward to seeing the new Waves Leisure Centre opening in Woolwich. I think the new central location over looking General Gordon Place and the square will be better for people using the Leisure Centre as will have better transport links.

    • Not sure what this comment has to do with an article about the eventual opening of the new Leisure Centre. Best raising those issues directly with the council, if not your local councillor.

When I was a kid yer mum would look after the bit of pavement outside yer house and not rely on the council. We’ve had 15 yrs of austerity, peoples jobs have disappeared, services have been cut to the bone. It’s not 1983 any more.
