Woolwich ferry suspended
The Woolwich ferry has been suspended today due to a technical fault according to TfL.
In addition there’s heavy traffic for a couple of miles starting around the ferry and both to and from Charlton.
That’s due to roadworks beginning this week and lasting until 2027 in order to construct cycleway 4.
I took a few photos of work a couple of days back and will put a post up about that later.
The ferry has seen additional traffic since Silvertown tunnel opened when tolls were applied to both the new tunnel and Blackwall tunnel. More drivers have since headed to the ferry to avoid paying, which in turn has caused increased congestion and slowed down buses heading to and from Woolwich town centre.

Do you think that the Woolwich Ferry will continue to operate since the new Silvertown Tunnel was built and opened in April this year. As most of the traffic are using the Silvertown Tunnel despite having to pay a toll fee to use the new tunnel and the Blackwall Tunnel.
The Woolwich Ferry Order 2000 was the last statutory instrument to legislate the ferry (basically, passing it over to TFL). Part of it states ‘“the Woolwich Ferry” means the ferry established, maintained, worked and regulated under section 14 of the 1885 Act’. At the very least, it would require Parliament to repeal either the free service or cut it entirely. On that front, at least, there’s a minimum expectation of service for the time being.
Totally agree with what you said.
I personally do think that Woolwich Ferry will continue to operate since the Silvertown Tunnel was built. Would be nice if the Tilbury-Gravesend ferry service could return one day. And Gosport-Portsmouth ferry service is still going.
