Project to build six Woolwich riverside towers nears finish line
Work on the final two out of six towers beside the Thames in Woolwich is now nearing completion.
Berkeley Homes are building on the former council car park beside Woolwich’s Waterfront leisure centre.
When complete a total of 764 homes will sit across the site featuring six towers.
It’s a dense area with all towers located in close proximity as well as close to the Callis Yard tower – which was also built on public land as well as plans to alter and convert Riverside House into student flats and a hotel.
That too was publicly owned.
Waterfront leisure centre directly west is set to close next year with a new centre on General Gordon Square.
Housing looks the most likely candidate for the Waterfront site. What form that takes remains unknown.
The above image shows the high density of blocks in the area. On the right a further development from Berkeley Homes comprising 660 flats has been submitted.
The tallest block will be located close to riverside blocks.
Commercial space is located at street level in a number of blocks.
One such example faces the roundabout beside Woolwich High Street and Beresford Street as seen below.
Berkeley Homes also have planning permission for further towers over the eastern end of Woolwich Elizabeth line station but there’s no sign of anything commencing.
Two plans have been approved with designs dating back 10-15 years but despite the transport links within seconds the site remains vacant.
The new riverside towers look nice with good views of the river.
However, the area will look much more appealing when the Ricerside Hotse development is completed and the old Waterfront Leisure Centre is knocked down and the site redeveloped with new homes and possible commercial space at street level. To provide a shop, cafe or restaurant.
I agree the towers do look really nice has you go pass them. But also do agree wih Graham that when the old Waterfront Leisure Centre is demolished that there needs to be new hones and some new commercial space at ground level. Which will also improve this area of Woolwich for local residents.
