Former World War 2 “bombs” discovered near forthcoming Thamesmead bus garage

The London Fire Brigade and Met Police have spent today (Thursday 14 May) dealing with discovered “bombs” in Thamesmead.

The discovery was made on Purland Street around midday is close to a proposed new bus garage recently covered on this site.

It’s not a massive shock to find ordnance on site given this area was part of the sprawling Royal Arsenal site.

In fact the recent applcation for the new bus garage featured historical maps of the site when it was part of the Arsenal and the exact spot featured large strucutres served by the Royal Arsenal’s railway network.

Clearly it was an important spot and so a natural target for the Luftwaffe. That or forgotten MOD explosives are on site.

Nowadays the area is part industry and part derelict land, and so when work begins on building the site’s history presents itself once again.
