Plumstead High Street changes now well under way

Work on street changes on Plumstead High Street near a school are now underway.

As covered on this site recently work is seeing the road narrowed near Pumstead police station and a nearby petrol station.

A new zebra crossing is to be installed outside Bannockburn Primary School alongside relocation of an existing bus stop located close to the school.

New paving

It does raise questions around where police vehicles will park. The area outside the petrol station would often see police vans and cars alongside a number of paving.

If the parking is reduced will even more police vehicles may be parked on paving (which is illegal in London and the Met were hardly setting a great example beforehand). Perhaps shutting various other police stations has caused that issue, with Thamesmead, Woolwich, Westcombe Park and Greenwich stations shut in the recent past.

Details

As an aside, Greenwich Council have offered next no information on this project. Either what it’s final state will be or where funding comes from. Is it TfL’s annual allocation of Local Implementation Plan funds each borough in London receives? Section 106 income? They don’t say.

But that’s not just in public-facing press but in reports to councillors. I read just about all council reports to see what’s going on and seen zero on this. Do council senior officers not think even elected councillors should know, and why aren’t the councillors asking?

High Street changes

It’s pretty unusual and in many other boroughs projects such as this are featured in reports in some detail.

And yet when I ever ask questions of Greenwich Council? They refuse to answer. That’s the “transparent” Labour Greenwich council currently in power for you. I’ve had no issues with any other authority run by any party.

They’re particularly awful with revealing info on street and public realm plans. Which may explain why so many areas are utterly dismal.

Work is set to take six weeks and we’re a good few weeks in now so all being well the dreaded temporary traffic lights will soon be gone. I’m not sure any street on this planet has seen as many as Plumstead High Street.

And just to please everyone, more are coming soon. A post on that soon.

  • I do tnink there is a need for an extra zebra crossing by Bannockburn School and moving the bus stop.
But narrowing the road wlby Plumstead Police Station will cause parking issues.
Greenwich Council make a lot of decision behind closed doors and are not at all transparent. They suspended Councillors from the Labour Party who dare challenge them on certain issues..
So this is why we need to get out in May Lical Elections and vote for a change of administration on Greenwich Council . Councillors tend to forget they are spending public money paid for through various taxes so we have a right to know what is happening and being planned in our Borough..
