Restaurant and housing beside Greenwich pub to be decided

Plans for new homes above a restaurant beside the North Pole pub in Greenwich are to be decided tonight.

Greenwich planners are recommending approval for the site on Norman Road. It’s one of those sites where plans have been around so long you end up forgetting what was proposed and a search on this site showed I’d covered plans in 2019. They’d been prior plans dating back to 2017.

Then a plan was refused in 2023 for “Construction of a mixed-use development comprising 5-storey building plus basement, providing 14 residential units (6×1-bed, 7×2-bed and 1×3-bed) and a restaurant at ground floor level.”

Plans have been around so long that visual renders don’t even show the block of flats built over the road which started around 2019 and completed a number of years ago.

Reaction

It appears the latest incarnation has garnered quite a reaction with 203 comments of support and 99 opposed. In total nine flats would be built alongside a restaurant at ground and basement levels and an additional commercial unit on the first floor.

Student block approved at other end of Norman Road

The site would be car-free which given ample bus routes, rail and the DLR are seconds away isn’t an issue. Don’t want a car-free home? Don’t move to one. Plenty are happy without their own car.

A fair bit more construction is on the way at the other end of Norman Road with a student tower approved near the junction with Creek Road. I need to get down to see if work has begun as a fair few planning conditions have recently been submitted for approval.

Halfway down Norman Road sees Saxon Wharf also currently under construction.

Some of the objectors to the development which will be decided tonight stated commercial units weren’t needed but with so many more people set to reside in the area, commercial units should find custom in years to come.

‘Some of the objectors to the development which will be decided tonight stated commercial units weren’t needed …’. They have a point given the number of commercial units lying empty in the new builds. The rents are too high for all but a supermarket operation.

@a2c: if you are a blue badge holder, don’t try and move to a place that does not provide parking.

  • There are lots of anti social behaviour issues from the North Pole, we have friends locally in the Ashburnham Triangle. I cannot imagine that this will be a comfortable place to live!
