Woolwich town centre pub closes for good
The Anglesea Arms in Woolwich town centre has permanently closed.
The pub sits near General Gordon Square close to the Tesco superstore and dates back to 1841. It was an old-school boozer once owned by Kent brewer Shepherd Neame.
It’s the latest pub to close in the town with nearby Antic operated Woolwich Equitable on General Gordon Square closing in recent years.
The Bull Tavern just off General Gordon Square also closed last year in advance of a housing development as part of a new leisure centre scheme.
Since the owner’s were forced out no progress has been made on the housing element and the building sits empty.
In 2024 The Guardhouse on the Royal Arsenal site was put up for sale by ownWoolwich pub closeder Young’s.
In recent months the Ordnance Arms on Beresford Square closed though work appears to have begun on a renovation of the building.
I loved Woolwich when I lived there. But it has changed so much, sadly not for the better. I started living in Woolwich when my dad was doing his last years prerelease from the army. We lived down Greenhill in military quarters. I went to Kidbrooke school at the age of 12. I left Kidbrooke in 1977 and started work in London.
Sadly Woolwich has really gone down hill and is not the thriving town centre it was when we had department stores like Cuffs RACS etc. The market used to also be larger with more stalls selling a larger range of products. You could get virtually anything you needed.
It is sad to see another pub close for good. But sadly it is part of the times we are living in now days. The Woolwich area does not always have the best reputation and this also keeps people away from coming to Woolwich.
Hopefully the regeneration of the area may help to improve Woolwich for the better.
