Woolwich town centre development shoots up

A Woolwich town centre development on Beresford Street has seen a big jump in height as work progresses.

The ‘Ropeyards’ site will bring 660 flats with one structure beside Beresford Street now well underway.

Further blocks are to be located away from Beresford Street.

The main core on a block beside Beresford Street is now up to 17 floors in height.

Passing by the site both on a bus and on foot recently does present somewhat of a canyon-like feel.

Pavements are not particularly wide and there’s no set-backs on street-facing frontages proposed.

Ropeyards render

That ensures a poor environment at street level for pedestrians.

The first building’s core is up to floor 17.

Tht block’s height will lower closer to Premier Inn and recently completed student blocks.

Area changes

There’s been many a development in this area – and plenty more to come.

Public realm improvements however are a dream.

And that’s the thing about Woolwich; for all the reports and research those in charge havn’t really much of a clue – or apparent interest – in how to reap the rewards on offer, so streets, passageways and public spaces are generally rarely a thought amongst the rising blocks that surround them.

New homes are welcome. Poor urban design around them isn’t.
