Street changes now well underway outside Plumstead station

Work on street changes around Plumstead station has moved over the past week to include the area directly outside.

Walmer Terrace is currently closed at the junction though pedestrian access to the station remains open.

This latest phase follows previous work at the bridge closer to a major development site that’ll include 1,913 homes upon completion. Funding for street changes was announced 11 years ago as part of a Housing Zone announcement.

As well as work both on and below the bridge, work last week saw changes commence on Plumstead High Street.

A short stretch of bus lane is proposed on the eastbound carriageway. On the westbound road towards Woolwich work has switched from that shown above, with the right-hand lane now open and the left lane closed.

As for what’s coming outside Plumstead station we have a recent Greenwich Council plan.

Note the continual cycle lane and new greenery. The main pedestrian and cycle crossing is moving a few metres west.

Mind you, a plan that Greenwich released for a nearby section showed three road lanes but two have been built so it may not be the most accurate.

The above plan doesn’t show an eastbound cycle lane though that is on the way over the road nearer Pettman Crescent.

Eastbound cycle lane and bus lane

It doesn’t appear the safest where the cycle lane merges into the road, with buses and general traffic too merging at that point.

Unfortunately Plumstead High Street is narrow for much if its length. Poor parking is also often a problem.

Upgrade

There’s no 3d renders of the project for much of this area so exactly how it’ll look remains to be seen. It can’t be much worse than what was there before, and any improvement will be welcome.

Streets outside the station didn’t previously give a good first impression of the town. It was a mix of tarmac patches and excessive street furniture, though in recent years a lot of that had been removed.

A more attractive environment for those reaching the station, including those in 1,913 homes at Lombard Square, will add to other recent improvements such as the addition of lifts at Plumstead station.

Further good news is a forthcoming increase in services from this December at the next timetable change.

Two more off-peak services will be operated by Southeastern restoring levels back to those seen before 2022.

  • I would like to know due to all these road changes, can you still turn left into Plumstead high street if you are travelling from the direction of HMP/McDonald’s as there is a road marking suggesting right turn

    • Good question. Looking at the photos I took and when there cars were turning left. I couldn’t see any signs prohibiting it though that may have changed since.

  • Not just Southeastern that serves Plumstead but Thameslink trains also stop at Plumstead.
