Woolwich Wimpy appears to have closed for good

Sad news as it looks like Wimpy in Woolwich has shut its doors for good.

In recent days a few people have mentioned it being closed and looking online seems to back that up.

In addition to that post, looking at the Wimpy website shows it being closed today. Well, it’s a Bank Holiday I thought but then checking other branches showed them being open and from what I can recall the Woolwich branch opened on previous Bank Holidays.

From last week

In fact looking again just now and it appears the page has now dissapeard from the Wimpy website and branch search page. Coupled with it not opening in recent days and it does appear to be gone.

History

The place was a bit of a local institution going back decades. Many who grew up locally who would have visited as a child. But few did since reaching adulthood, which explains ongoing closures of branches across the country.

It’s not cheap. For me the last time I would have gone was when working for Greenwich Council and that wasn’t common. Sometimes the nostalgia-evoking posters and smell would pull me in. I never regretted it though it cost a pretty penny.

As for those still going it appears Eltham is going strong. Welling closed some years though Bexleyheath remains open.

If you fancy a bender followed with a brown derby, those are your ever shrinking choices.

That is a sad news, the Wimpy restaurant has been there at least 40 years I think.

  • Sad news for the many loyal customers who have used the Woolwich Wimpey since it opened at least 40 years ago. Including myself and my family.
I hope the staff were relocated to other branches so they could keep their jobs.

I think Woolwich had two Wimpy branches at one stage? The other was in Hare street. That turned into a Star Burger, they also soldiered on until very recently. I spoke to the owner as he was closing up for the last time. I think he mentioned selling to another restaurant operator but it was a sketchy conversation. As for the closure of the Wimpy on the corner of Green Ends and Thomas Street I literally thought it was bullet proof. It survived riots after all. Sad news.

  • I hope that the rest of Wimpy restaurants don’t shut forever. I really do like Wimpy and I like their burgers. Such a shame that the Wimpy restaurant in Woolwich is closing down. I bet it’ll be become another fast food chain like McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, KFC ect.
