Closed New Cross pub the White Hart reopening as The Broken Wheel

Work is underway on renovating and reopening a well known New Cross pub which closed in 2020.

The former White Hart is to become The Broken Wheel., with the building is one of the oldest pubs in New Cross and occupying a priminant spot at the junction of New Cross Road and Queens Road.

Plans were submitted this year covering work on the listed building. That was approved last month.

Work includes “replacement glazing to windows, repainting of the external joinery, the installation of a new awnings and external lighting to the front, the installation of new extraction and plant equipment to the rear elevations and roofs”.

An Instagram account shows its opening due in autumn and work well underway inside.

It’s not just the pub which is listed but an ornate pipe outside, which apparently was once used as ventilation for toilets.

  • Beautiful architecture along here, so pleased it’s protected. And nice that a pub can reopen, be refurbed with listed protection refurbishments, and without talk of flats above, etc., etc.!
New Cross was THE place for nightlife in SE London when ‘I were a lad’ haha. It was- pub in Greenwich, Mottingham or Chislehurst, then off to NC for the late stuff and music, both live and DJ.
Interestingly, you caught an E-Bike and rider illegally on the pavement in your shot too! Any chance of a few street police somewhere to cut these minor demeanours, which aren’t minor when someone gets hurt, and nobody is insured.

  • Nice to see the former White Hart pub in New Cross reopened and renamed as The Broken Wheel. I think that more pubs that closed should reopen and to either keep the same name or to be renamed.

  • Great to see this opening and hopefully with all of its historic features intact. But one of those features is its name and there is no way it should be called the broken anything. That sounds negative and the recipe for disaster. Keep its name obviously. It will always be the white heart
