Housing plan beside Erith pub the Running Horses

Plans have been submitted to built 15 flats in Erith behind the Running Horses pub.

The site near Erith High Street sits near another housing block constructed during the 2010s.

Proposed block

It’s currently a disused car park with the pub having a newer car park in use located just off Erith High Street. It sits a short walk from Erith station with Southeastern rail services to central London as well as interchanging with the Elizabeth line at Abbey Wood.

History

Housing existed on the site until demolished during World War II. Images from Bexley Archives in the application from 1950 show housing cleared. The pub itself was badly damaged by a WWII bomb and rebuilt.

Much of what was left in Erith was then demolished in the 1960s to build a shopping centre and tower blocks.

Erith town centre masterplan from 2015

Around a decade ago an area masterplan was produced which would have brought back some traditional street layouts while also incorporating tower blocks.

AAvA Architects are behind the design. The applicant is Dhillons Development Ltd.

  • Another local pub in Erith, Southeast London to be knocked down and replaced by new more affordable flats. Such a shame that how pubs across London are being destroyed and demolished and the government wants more new apartments to be built. Rather let pubs close and to be replaced by new flats and/or homes.

Rest in peace the Running Horse pub.
