Greenwich Council confirm location of 40 new cycle parking hangers

The location of 40 cycle parking hangers across in Greenwich borough have been confirmed.

Back in February 50 sites were consulted upon with the final total dropping to 40 though they do say “the remaining 10 sites are still under consideration”. Most were situated in Greenwich and Plumstead.

Whilst the cycle parking should encourage more cycling it won’t help improve some dismal street for both pedestrians and cyclists – and in particular linking east Greenwich, north Greenwich and Charlton.

Infrastructure lags behind

Greenwich Council have frequently ignored TfL guidance on investing money from a myriad of new developments across the area. The authority frequently ignoring TfL suggestions on how and where to allocate Section 106 revenue was recently covered on this site.

Transport for London also continually highlight ongoing issues around Active Travel Assessments related to planning applications which curiously always manage to ignore routes between various parts of Greenwich ensuring little or no investment for safer and more attractive streets between new homes, existing housing, shops, public transport links and other amenities.

The list of 40 locations is here. Not the most user friendly notification. One installed they are available to book at BikeNest. You can use their postcode search to find any near you.

These new cycle hangers are a key move to encourage cycling but until some very poorly designed streets see some focus and investment, it’s still not going to lead to transformative change.

  • What a joke! Nothing near Woolwich or west Thamesmead whatsoever and as usual* all the investment goes to the wealthy Greenwich areas.

(*Bike lanes built in eltham and Greenwich. Woolwich doesn’t have anything yet)

  • Ugly ,ugly ,ugly and, in some places, adding to pavement congestion alongside bins left out on the pavement , overflowing litter bins (why aren’t these bins emptied more regularly ) and the menace of abandoned hire bikes despite more docking areas apparently being provided.
Really hope these boxes are used by cyclists and that council officers and newly elected and reelected Cllrs check usage . I am told there is a waiting list for these boxes .

  • I have one oof these on the street across from my house. Completely full of deliveroo / uber eats bikes and bags. No room for my bike. So glad my council tax is paying for commercial storage.

    • Thought these bike sheds were only for residents’ use – not commercial users ?
Have you asked questions of council officers or your local Cllrs ?

    • They’re paid for out of fees from the people renting them and not council tax. All the council has to do is provide somewhere to put them.

      • Look at the council’s contracts. They aren’t going to make that kind of money on renting them

I remember local Labour touting £150 money-off vouchers for children’s bikes, shortly before the election. Wonder if anything useful is progressing on that front.

Lewisham council plonked down one of these at the corner of my road. Never been so much as opened let alone used.
