New pub “The Ship” opens in Greenwich near Cutty Sark

A new pub has quietly opened in Greenwich at a spot beside the Thames.

The Ship is located in the former Byron burger and Frankie & Benny’s unit beside Greenwich pier where Thames Clippers and tourist cruise boats stop.

Unit before conversion into The Ship pub

That now means Greenwich is set to see two pubs open in a week, with Meantime’s The Dial opening next week on 7th November.

The Ship has had a somewhat arduous process in opening with some earlier plans being submitted in 2022 with rejection in 2024 before changes were made. Frank Dowling is behind the pub and also operates the nearby Trafalgar Tavern which too saw a dispute over outside seating.

Thanks to Marilyn DiCara for the photograph. I saw her post on social media which alerted me that it’d opened. There’s nothing on the pub’s website or social media pages.

Pub growth along river

It’s likely to do extremely well given the huge amount of passing footfall in such a prime location. In the past decade the number of riverside pubs in Greenwich has increased with The Sail Loft just to the east. Add in The Ship then the traditional pubs just to the west and it adds up to fair amount.

Another relatively recent addition was also Enderby Wharf to the east. With thousands more homes due to rise around that area on the western side of the peninsula expect a couple more to open in years to come.

  • Went there on Saturday it was lovely albeit a bit chaotic as has just opened.

Just keep an eye on your bill though as was charged different prices for drinks and raised it with the owner of The Trafalgar who owns this too.

    Awaiting his response…
