Blackheath hotel conversion and rebuild plan submitted

Plans have gone in to convert Clarendon hotel in Blackheath into specialist older persons’ accommodation.

Work will also include demolition of sections to the rear and new buildings constructed.

The application – at a frankly ludicrous 232 documents – has only just been uploaded onto Lewisham Council’s website. The applicant is Elysian Blackheath LP.

A total of 77 units are proposed for the site, which according to the application’s Planning Statement “were originally constructed as a row of terraced houses but were amalgamated and converted into hotel use in the post-war period.

“The hotel was extended in the 1970s to incorporate two large rear extensions of three and four storeys, respectively, and more modest single storey extensions”.

A publicly accessible restaurant is part of the plans alongside “the offering of a multi-purpose room which will be available for hire free of charge for members of the wider community”.

New build structures to the rear

Architects Stanton Williams are behind designs for the site.

Other changes include alteration to the front forecourt with a one-way vehicle route.

Outdoor seating would be provided for the restaurant alongside landscaping and the creation of the public pocket park.

This post was supposed to go up some days ago but Lewisham’s website kept keeling over. Not great when there’s 232 documents.

  • Looks like there will be a lot of new buildings going up at the back. That photo is greenwashing at its best with a very unrealistic render.

  • I was not aware any changes wete planned for the site of the Claredon Hotel. So thank you John for bringing this to our attention..
Thete is a need for older residents accommodation as older people’s accommodation is often not included in any new developments.
This will be a pleasant site for the residents being close to Blackheath, Blackheath Village and Greenwich Park..

  • Not great for Blackheath and Greenwich businesses as it will close the best local tourist hotel in the area

    • Yes that is true Mike. The Clarendon Hotel will be a huge loss for the Blackheath and Greenwich areas. Another hospatality business to close it’s doors for good.

  • I agree, it is bad news for the small businesses in the area.

  • Another cut and paste boring set of new build structures, which look seriously out of place in that render.

I’m starting to think anyone can be an architect these days; just copy the design of almost every other building development getting thrown up across London. Perhaps it’s an A.I. application designing all this crap.

    • Not many architects want to design such dull buildings. The client makes the decision – if an architect is even involved.
