Lewisham town centre development now very close to completion

A development visible across south east London and it’s fair to say has divided opinion is now almost finally complete.

In recent weeks I’ve stopped by a few times around Lewisham Gateway from Muse (no, not those boys) to take photos yet havn’t actually got around to put up a new post, but here we finally are.

Fences down at base of tower

Still, I’m not as lethargic as this site as it’s been many, many years since the old roundabout was removed, a new road layout implemented and then, well, twiddled thumbs.

Even when building work begun it halted as a contractor left resulting in another year’s delay as a new company was sought to attach cladding to much of the site.

Cladding work almost complete

But here it is, and they’ve given it the name “Filigree”. No idea.

As ever I took dozens of pics recently which is way too much for one post. I usually umm and ahh about what’s best to include – then regret it as soon as pressing “publish”.

Looking towards station

The image above is looking towards Lewisham station with DLR and Southeastern services. The DLR is to gain new trains improving services (though new stock is running late yet frequency improvements are apparently still on track) while Southeastern Metro don’t really seem to know what’s happening.

Much of the cuts implemented on Southeastern Metro in recent years will remain into 2025. Nothing like taking advantage of potential custom.

Through-route

The above image shows the pedestrian route through the site to a crossing heading towards the town centre.

Work has now begun on major changes to Lewisham High Street as part of a £24 million project while the shopping centre is set to be demolished and redeveloped with thousands of homes.

New outside space opposite path from Lewisham Gateway site

When that happens, the path above will lead directly through the site.

While the tallest part of this phase appeared complete around the time of contractor issues, the structure facing west has been one of the last to approach completion.

Lewisham Gateway

It’s certainly a thing.

A Sainsbury’s is due to open at ground floor level beside the bus stops. Not a particularly big shop. Your usual “Local” as part of a new-build.

Sainsbury’s coming

Head to the other side of the Lewisham Gateway site and what should have been a cinema – before the chain went under – has planters now outside.

Empire Cinemas were due to move in. Perhaps if it didn’t take so bloody long to build they may have opened and succeeded.

Cinema due on site now TBD

The planter leaves a tiny gap beside the road for no apparent reason.

No, I’m not walking the long way round.

The image below shows phase one to the right and two on the left.

Phase one on left

Anyway, that concludes our little look around.

Almost a decade on from when the below image was taken, it’ll finally be ready.

Long term vacant

Good Lord we build slowly in this country.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Thanks for this update. Do we know any more about what other shops/restaurants will definitely be opening there (beyond the Sainsbury’s)? I hope there’s a good range and it all opens soon

    • Yeah, other than Blank Street Coffee & GAILs Bakery, independent brunch spot ‘Break the Fast’ is also moving there

      • Blank Street Coffee? They’re actually good! Are you sure? Last I heard it was Black Sheep Coffee.

        • I think it is Black Sheep Coffee and not Blank Street Coffee.

      • I agree with others. It was an awful part of south east London. A squalid roundabout and wasteland. Its now not perfect but much much better than it was. And will help kick start more development ie the shopping centre and beyond. Thank God

  • Lewisham Town Centre near completiion is good news after all these years. I do agree with local resident Lewisham Town Centre does need some more shops and restaurants. I hope we get a good range of new retailers in the area.

  • Thank you J,
I love your updates. I was waiting for ages for a shop near the station whilst I wait 30 minutes (!!!?) for my next southeastern train. Sainsbury’s is welcome as it would be a take away restaurant.
    Keep it up! 💪💪

  • I stopped working in Lewisham a decade ago and that’s what I remember , the derelict site abandoned after Debenhams pulled out and it languishing there unloved. The shopping centre was pretty miserable, it needs to go and to give something decent to the people of Lewisham. I always liked the market, great value fruit n veg, but one Tiger Tiger and a few out of date fashion outlets really were not offering very much.

  • ‘It’s certainly a thing.’ Indeed, it is. 😂

  • It looks like a Pret has also applied to move into one of the ground floor retail units by the DLR.

  • Pret would be very popular. They are expensive, but the residents of all those shiny new build flats can afford the prices.

    • Pret are probably the cheapest coffee chain. Doing coffees for 99p again I think
