Transport for London seek Greenwich Thames pier upgrade
Transport for London have launched early market engagement on plans to alter and upgrade Greenwich river pier beside the Cutty Sark.
A report from TfL states that they are “seeking private investment to upgrade and reimagine our Greenwich and Festival piers”.
Thames Clippers aka Uberboat serve the pier as do tourist-oriented leisure journeys and river cruises.
TfL’s report continues: “This exciting opportunity invites potentially interested developers to submit their ideas to enhance and improve the piers, while retaining their primary function of serving customers for our river services”.
Festival pier sits on the south bank beside the Royal Festival Hall.
Greenwich piers
Back in 2021 plans were submitted to upgrade another pier in Greenwich. That was the structure beside the o2 though little progress seen so far though was approved.
Before that in 2017 plans were submitted to create a new riverboat pier on the western side of the o2 beside the Intercontinental hotel. That too has yet to progress.
Other ideas include a pier a short distance south near Morden Wharf and an adjacent site that was to formerly see a cruise liner terminal.
Another pie is planned around Charlton as part of the area masterplan for up to 8,000 new homes.
As for Greenwich pier, TfL state a deadline was set for 28th June and responses are now being analysed.
Why not make the best of the piers by improving them to them to make them safer for people to use.
Boats services are very popular and new piers being built close to new housing developments near the river should be popular with local residents. As more developments are built with no or limited car parking spaces.
