Further Herringham Quarter housing plans near proposed Charlton data centre to be revealed
Consultation on future plots at a 1,212-home Charlton development will be held this week.
Herringham Quarter sits within the Charlton Riverside masterplan site which is set to include 8,000 homes. Outline permission across the overall site and detailed plans for initial phases have already gained approval, though work is yet to begin.

What’s covered during this week’s consultation is the next two plots.
Since the overall plan was approved a data centre proposal has emerged. This has the potential not only to make the housing plots less appealing through noise, but crucially cuts off proposed walking and cycling links plus looks to threaten a public-transport link across the 8,000-home masterplan site.

A website on the consultation mentions “Walking & cycling routes – New routes with low levels of car parking, to support sustainable travel.”
Well, perhaps, but fewer of them than proposed.
Public transport
The public transport link – which would be key for the wider areas – across the wider 8,000-home site has already been compromised when Greenwich councillors approved a distribution warehouse to the west impeding on what would be the most direct route a bus, BRT or even future tram route could take.
This means the warehouse and a far bigger data centre plot could ensure a slow, meandering and indirect route at best – and at worst nothing to serve new housing. Comprising quality of life for thousands of residents for decades to come.

The dual carriageway to the south would be a longer walk and is already being narrowed in places with bus lanes being removed due to cycle lane works. A dedicated route through the masterplan in addition to the dual carriageway seems imperative.
Let’s see what transpires.
As for the latest housing plans in Charlton an event will be held at St Richard’s Church (Upper Hall), 26 Swallowfield Rd, London SE7 7NR this Thursday between 17.00 – 20.00.
Ah – and one last thing about the masterplan area is that cranes are now up for 188 homes on a site on a separate site between Eastmoor street and Westmoor Street near the Thames Barrier.

Surely the data centre should be located in an area not long earmarked for housing? The Charlton Riverside development has been in the planning for what seems like decades now.
I hope we see more new develipments soon starting on Charlton Riverside in the near future.
From what I have read in previous posts on this site about the Data Centre the land on which it is ‘earmarked ” was changed from a housing preference to an industrial preference in the Draft Local Plan.
The Council’s Environmental Impact Assessment Scoping Opinion for the Data Centre site, which was requested by the Applicant , should be available by now – don’t know if these things are published on the Council website . Assume they are – they should be.
Thank you for confirming tbis Kathy. As ypu say these changes should be published on the Council website.
