Housing block approved near Woolwich barracks

Occasionally when writing up something for this site a previous story will pop up from some time ago and raise the question of “what happened what that?”.

Well, today’s post is on that theme as last week while looking up something else the issue of a housing block in Woolwich appeared. It was from 2023 and centred on a housing proposal on an MOT centre near the main entrance to Woolwich barracks.

Located between the now demolished King’s Arms pub and the closed Village Blacksmith’s pub, the proposal was approved earlier this year.

Approved block in Woolwich

Not exactly breaking news then, but interesting that the green light was given. Previous plans from 2019 were refused.

In total 17 flats have been approved on the Abbey Autos site.

Barracks

It’s the latest in a line of new builds at Hillreach and Artillery Place over the past decade or two though by far the biggest change will happen when the barracks is redeveloped.

Aside from one small area the MOD plan to vacate most of the site, with 1,920 homes planned. A masterplan was approved earlier this year.

Proposed building heights in context

Buildings would generally be mid density with slightly higher at points closer to the town centre.

Ah, and one more site nearby which is in line for housing is a block on Artillery Place where Meridian Home Start gained approval for conversion into 17 flats last year.

  • Again it will be good to see the site being brought back in to use to provide 17 new homes. Which will be welcomed.
I wish now the Council Planning Yeam will do something about the Island Site on Wellington Street in Woolwich..which is boarded up and falling to a real state of despair and full of rats which run out on to Wellington Street. Either agree planning permission for redevelopment of the site or demolish the site. It has been empty now for a least a decade if not more..

  • Also is there any news on the old Blacksmith Pub site being redeveloped? This is becoming another eye sore wih all the rubbish piled up at the front. Again this can cause rodents.

    • The rubbish that was in the doorway was removed a couple of months ago. Was jogging by when this was happening so I got to have a look in the old pub. Still the same inside. Was a decent pub.

  • I agree Graham. The local MP Matthew Pennycook is the Minisier For Housing. He has known about these sites for years but has nothing aboiut it whatsoever.

  • I agree with Graham and Kay M’s comments. The Goverment and Local Councils need to act more quickly to get empty buildings and sites brought back in to use. Some sites on the Greenwich Peninsula sat empty for over 20 years before being redeveloped. Local Labour MP’s and Councillors who about it and did nothing.
