Blackheath supermarket plan scrapped

Plans for an Asda in Blackheath Village appear to have been scrapped.

The site at 15-17 Blackheath Village was formerly a Lloyds bank located in a rather grand and impressive building near Blackheath station.

Since the bank’s closure around six years ago proposals for an Ole & Steen Danish bakery were submitted but didn’t proceed before the Asda plan arrived.

Bakery plan went nowhere

Now that has been scrapped with a vet surgery on the cards. Third time’s the charm?

Blackheath Village is set to welcome a new mini supermarket with the arrival of Sainsburys, with the company returning for the first time since closing in 1959.

Not in the same location as that shop though, which was located mere metres away from the site where an Asda may have stood.

  • Hi

I just like to see buildings in use
All boarded up and they are ripe for redevelopment or demolition…same thing to Greenwich Council

    • Same here, it’s already difficult for independent businesses to survive. There should be incentives in place to support independent businesses otherwise we end up with the same big names everywhere.

    • Or even Lewisham as in this case

  • I hope a new owner/business can be found for the premises soon. I too like to see empty buildings brought back in to use
There are a lot of empty buildings and sites left empty for years in both Greenwich and Lewisham Boroughs that are in need of
    Refurbishment and or full redevelopment..

@C: ‘I too like to see empty buildings brought back in to use.’ Business rates and rent are the killers, which means that only a retailer with deep pockets can even get a foothold, let alone thrive. However, I don’t think that Asda would have been a good fit for the Village and am dubious about Sainsbury’s, too.

    • Yes Gwst, but after an appeal. I think by then they changed their minds.

  • I saw a construction notice on the door saying that refurbishment is underway to form a ‘Creature Comforts’ vetinary facility – works to complete in Q4.

@BP: saw a sign advertising a coming vets’ practice. It couldn’t be in a worse location – nowhere to stop, let alone park.
