Greenwich development beside Deptford Creek revealed

A development in Greenwich on Norman Road is being revealed as scaffolding comes down and the project approaches completion.

Saxon Wharf is a 145-homes site located beside the creek on a former skip yard.

Notting Hill Genesis are launching homes in around three weeks. It’s situated on Norman Road which is a pretty grotty old street despite a number of developments rising along it over the past decade. Next to no money has been used by Greenwich Council to improve some very tired estates nearby.

It’s little more than a two minute walk from Greenwich DLR and National Rail stations with Thameslink and Southeastern Metro services.

Block near Greenwich station

A site to the south was used by Thames Water during Thames Tideway construction. It’s now vacant and could be a future residential development beside Deptford Creek.

Greenwich Council’s draft Local Plan states the site could see a “mixed use scheme including light industrial and residential uses alongside public access to Deptford Creek” with 270 homes on site.

Given the need for housing that seems a good outcome. It’s a site near excellent public transport links and amenities.

It would also open up a further stretch of a proposed path beside the creek. Saxon Wharf will see a short stretch open, whilst a section to the north was built but never opened to the public. It’s supposed to when Saxon Wharf completes. Let’s see if it does.

Student block approved

Another proposed site along Norman Road is a tower near Creek Road which includes 414 student rooms.

  • The developers and Greenwich Council should invest in highway work, improved street lighting and public realm to make Norman Road more pleasant and safer to use for residents of the new developments.
Despite becoming mainly residential over the last few years as new developments are built. Greenwich Council have continued to neglect the area. Which is in need of major improvements..
