Closure likely for Woolwich Beefeater restaurant as company announce big cuts

A Beefeater restaurant in Woolwich could be closing soon after owner Whitbread announced wide-ranging plans for the business.

The company also own Premier Inn and have already started to close restaurants at other locations. In Bexleyheath the on-site Brewers Faye – another Whitbread brand – closed as the Premier Inn saw plans for further rooms to be added and a smaller restaurant tailored towards guests.

An update today states the company is looking to cut 3,800 jobs across their hotel and restaurant business. The Guardian report that all Beefeaters and Brewers Fayre restaurants will now close.

Whitbread’s own release today on changes to the business states “we plan to convert all our remaining branded restaurants to an integrated food and beverage offer that is preferred by our hotel guests and will unlock the addition of more highly profitable extension rooms”.

Woolwich changes

If the company do follow that model in Woolwich then more hotel rooms may be added. Of course they may decide to rent out the site, which is amidst mass housing growth which could ensure a healthy future for any occupant.

A total of 330 student rooms are located directly next door on one side.

Whilst on the other work has begun on the Ropeyards development comprising 660 homes.

Over the road is the Macbean Street site which has seen approval for 930 student rooms, 425 co-living room and 93 flats.

Approved development across from Premier Inn

Close to that are development plans on the Poundstretcher site approved in February 2026.

Greenwich Council’s former Riverside House block also has approved plans for conversion to student flats.

They’ll be no shortage of people moving to the area to sustain any restaurant, pub or bar. Then again all these sites will themselves contain commercial space offering competition.

As ever I’ll keep an eye out to see what changes are proposed.

  • It would bea shame to see the Beefeater Restaurant close completely..
Although I have to admit customer numbers have fallen over recent times.
I do not know if a new menu was introduced sith a bigger range of choice of food would help increase football at the restaurant or not.

  • McDonald’s or Greggs would make Killing. God knows we Brits have a blue palate and discerning preferences when it comes to gourmet cuisine 😆

I may be relying on iffy sources, but I looked at two lists of Beefeater branches set for the axe. One was in the Liverpool echo and the other was in the express. Although difficult to navigate with out an Ad blocker,
The Woolwich branch was not on their closure lists. So, who knows ?
