Second boat hotel on the Royal Docks near Cable Car set to be approved

Newham Council planners are recommending that councillors approve plans for another boat hotel on the Royal Docks next week.

Located close to an existing boat hotel, a second if approved would also be close to the Cable Car terminal and near City Hall.

Proposed second floating hotel

If approved the hotel would feature 233 rooms. A meeting tomorrow should decade with officers recommending approval.

Section 106 revenue would see £220,000 for a cycle docking station as well as £50,000 for public realm improvements according to a report before councillors. It covers Royal Victoria Docks Waterfront, a footpath along Munday Road and a route between Wesley Road and Evelyn Road.

A cycle lane is currently under construction nearby. Other proposed works include:

  • Kayak, Paddleboard and other water sport hire facilities
  • Café/Kiosk
  • Open and publicly accessible landscaped boardwalks, bridges, pontoons, and floating islands to create a Lagoon space between the two vessels
  • A dedicated pontoon with changing facilities for Open Water Swimming

Changing area

It’s another example of how this area has changed in recent years with numerous new homes built close by. The Mayor and London Assembly moved from their former site near Tower Bridge into a former Siemens building.

Further big plans are proposed with the Royal Docks unveiling a “floating park” earlier this year.

As seen in planning application.

Various major housing developments are proposed relatively nearby, though many have been on the cards for decades without much progress.

The Excel Centre nearby has also expanded recently and put on exhibitions in addition to traditional trade fairs. They currently have one about Elvis and another Cleopatra (the Egyptian not the 1990s girl group unfortunately).
