Demolition plan for former pub The Grove in Dulwich

A former pub on Lordship Lane in Dulwich has seen demolition plans submitted.

The pub suffered a fire in 2012 and has been shuttered ever since. Last year Stonegate’s lease ended with the Dulwich Estate now taking control and seeking demolition.

It’s claimed that “after discussions with Southwark Council about viable short term options, while longer term development is considered, a planning application has now been submitted to demolish the existing building.

“Surveys indicate the former pub building is beyond repair and that its structural integrity has been compromised. The Estate also explored whether the building could return to commercial use, but concluded that this would not be viable given the scale of work required and the wider economic climate facing hospitality.”

Future

In the near term until around 2029 it’s proposed that a temporary community garden be located on site. The Dulwich Forum state that “the current temporary skate park will remain as it is and is not part of the planning application proposal.”

Plan for The Grove pub site

The pub occupied a prominant site at a busy junction. According to the planning applications’ Heritage Statement it “dates to the 1930s and is of the vernacular revival style. It is likely to have undergone rebuilding in the mid-20th century after suffering from bomb damage”.

  • I truly hope they don’t get rid of the skate park, it gives me a bit of faith in humanity every time I walk past.

  • Such a shame to see a pub like this after the fire and to be demolished. At it’ll be replaced by new homes or apartments. And maybe have a plaque to remember where the pub used to be before.
