Streets around Plumstead station to see changes
The latest plan to change the area around Plumstead station has been revealed by Greenwich Council.
Work has long been planned with funding announced a decade ago as part of the Thames Housing Zone. Almost 2,000 homes are rising a short distance from the station at “Lombard Square” with Plumstead the closest station.
The latest plan out for consultation is similar to one shown a few years back. It appears one relatively new change is closing a path crossing the railway.
A new security fence would block the path over the railway. Let’s hope after spending money on improvements an ugly fence is stuck up detracting from changes.

The rationale behind the move seems to be removing one pedestrian crossing in the Woolwich-bound direction. There’s currently two which will be altered to one solitary crossing.

Other changes include rationalising the cycle lanes. There’s also plans for a cycle lane on the ramp leading from the one-way system yet still retaining three lanes for traffic. It appears that’ll be a tight squeeze.

It’s hard to shed any tears over the existing mess of a layout going. The entrance to Plumstead from the station has long been a discordant mess.
It doesn’t currently give a good first impression with all sorts of street clutter and a mess of paving materials.

Parking in the area has long been chaotic with minimal enforcement.
In the past 130 bus drivers signed a petition noting how poor it was around bus stops. I’m not sure changes proposed will change that.

There’s also new landscaping and greenery planned around the station.
We’re going full circle again. Greenery was installed between Plumstead and Woolwich, never maintained then removed.
Will this be any better? Hopefully but past form doesn’t bode well. Still, seeing solid plans move forward is a big step forward and it’ll certainly be a far better arrival into the town upon completion.
Calum O’Byrne Mulligan, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Sustainability and Transport said:
“The Plumstead Public Realm Improvement Project is about creating a safer, greener and more welcoming environment for everyone who lives, works and travels through the area. This statutory consultation is an important step, and I encourage residents and businesses to take the time to review the proposals and share their views.”

Makes sense – the new crossing is a natural desire line anyway for anyone going eastbound out of the station. It’s good for cyclists too as the lights are a real pinch point.
I agree with you on landscaping, and can only hope that as part of the works some CCTV for parking enforcement will be put up…
Makes sense – the new crossing is a natural desire lane for anyone exiting the station and I prefer using it late at night. Good for cyclists too as the lights are a real pinch point.

Definitely will help to improve the area for everyone including cycling..
Money must be spent on improve tbe public realm and provides more CCTV.
We do need to improve tbe parking enforcement in this area and along by the station and mosque where cars are often double parked making the area difficult for buses and traffic to pass safely.
Road safety must be paramount to make using roads safer for everyone..
As part of the Greener Greenwich and programmes to encourage walking, enhance exercise options as part of healthy initiatives, why not use this opportunity to deliver a pedestrian walk between Plumstead Railway Station platform and that of Woolwich Arsenal Railway Station. The reason is that one can visually see Woolwich Railway Station platforms when standing on Plumstead Railway Station platforms. Not delivering such a walkway represents a wasted opportunity.
