Sushi restaurant coming to Woolwich town centre
Plans are in for a new sushi restaurant on Powis Street in Woolwich town centre.
Kokoro have dozens of branches across the country and now Woolwich looks set to see a branch at number 51. When looking at the main photo above its two doors down from Poundland (former Marks & Spencer) on the left next to Virtue Specs.
It’s to be located in the former Mama 2 Mama café and baby bank which sadly closed earlier this year.
The frontage of this building was one of a number revamped as part of a project to improve shopfronts in the town funded by Heritage England.

Much of Woolwich town centre is now a conservation area and shopfront work did a fantastic job in a number of locations.
Inside the unit is pretty small so sit down tables will be limited on the ground floor though the first floor will be available for sit down dining.
A takeaway service is available and of course delivery options will be available. This stretch of Powis Street is often a hive of many bikes and mopeds waiting for pick ups.
Powis Street
Newly installed street furniture ensure there’s no space outside for tables in the warmer months which goes against what Greenwich specifically claimed to want for the street.
An obvious outcome when installing so much street furniture and it was raised when the street’s revamp was revealed. Doing so would hinder options for extra seating outside many business along but they went ahead anyway.

Now many restaurants – both existing and in future – lack the ability for outside seating.
Overall there’s a lot to like about the street changes but some of it was bizarre. Alongside a vast amount of street furniture and planters replicating a 1980s revamp which failed as raised red brick planters hindered pedestrian movement, another baffling decision was using bright white paving material which discoloured almost immediately.

It was particularly odd in area where business leaves rubbish to be collected.
Various parts of the street looked grotty within weeks.

Still, let’s not end on a downer. It’s welcome to see a new business in Woolwich and widening the choice of food on offer.

Sushi in Woolwich of all places is just bizarre. I don’t see this as a viable operation and give it a couple of years before closure.
Why bizarre? When the food market was open it was packed. And Woolwich is gaining a sizable student population. Makes a change from another chicken shop opening. I actually thought this was going to be at the site of the deli that closed down by Salt as that had a sign for interviews for Gourmet Sushi in the window. Perhaps Woolwich is getting two sushi restaurants?
The Gourmet Sushi is another Sushi restaurant opening next-door to the Blue Tit hairdressers.
I was just about to say that! Let’s hope it’s more successful than the Italian wine bar that was there before it!
Hitachi sushi has been operating in the area for a couple of years and is quite successful. Their sushi is top quality.
With the amount of students coming to live in new student accommodation in Wookwich aling with local residents and new residents moving in to new developments in the area over the next couple of years. I am sure they will privably be a home delivery service as well provided by the restaurant..Greenwicb in a multi cultural Borough i am sure the new sushi restaurant in Woolwich will do very well. It give people another choice of food to choose from when eating out.
Quite pleased to see more new options opening up, with the two new sushi places and the Chinese restaurant opening soon in one of the Royal Arsenal towers.
We regularly end up heading to Canary Wharf or Greenwich when eating out due to the limited choices in Woolwich.
Where will the Chinese be? On the ground floor of one of the blocks of flats in the Royal Arsenal?
I agree i think the restaurant will be popular with people wanting something different or a taste of hone..As C said we live in a multi cultural Borough so nice to see a range if different foods on offer catering for all taste.
This is great news. A different and healthier alternative.
It’s great to see the town bouncing back. Compared to many neighboring town centres, Woolwich is improving. Powis Street/Beresford Sq revamped (although can be better maintained). Newly announced retailers/services B&M, Post Office and now Kokoro. Not to mention new Chinese supermarket, Chinese restaurant and another Sushi place in the Royal Arsenal. Hopefully something good will takeover the vacant WHSmith and Halifax sites as well as the commercial units of the art deco Wick Tower building.
Whatever happened to the Lidl expanding next door to the previous Better Gym to take over the whole building? It is the worse Lidl for stock and is always busy and cramped with queues lining down the aisles.
That, and I wish Boots would invest in their Woolwich store.
@Phil: ‘Lidl … is always busy and cramped with queues lining down the aisles.’ They are all like that. In my local Lidl (Lewisham), it is usual for only one till to be staffed and for the queue to use the self-checkouts, very long.
Addressing my first comment, I forgot about the student element but I am only ever in Woolwich on a weekday and never in the evenings. The town centre looks depressed and not very inviting, so it remains to be seen whether these new food operations can make a go of it.
