Appeal to save the White Swan pub in Charlton
An appeal has been launched to save the White Swan pub in Charlton Village.
A crowdfunder is looking to raise £360,000 to buy the site and as of writing it’s already up to nearly fifty grand.
A number of perks are on offer to those who contribute including the chance to see a small-scale gig by Squeeze singer Glenn Tilbrook.
That’s got to be worth a few quid’s donation.
Owners
The pub is currently owned by Mendoza who are known for overseeing a number of pub closures. They’re linked to Asif Aziz who has overseen a fair few pub closures and as landlord had issues with the Prince Charles cinema.
In 2023 it gained local listing with shop plans following.
If a takeover can be achieved the plan is to reopen the pub with an arts centre and live music.

Charlton has last a few pubs recently and we don’t need to lose another for good. Down in lower Charlton The Pickwick is undergoing conversing works with no guarantee it’ll open as a pub again.
The Anchor & Hope by the Thames is also currently closed.

The White Horse is long gone as well.
The Victoria Inn has been lost for decades.

The White Swan could have a decent future given ample housing in the vicinity and match day punters when Charlton are playing at home.
There’s also 8,000 homes proposed down the hill. Granted, the uphill walk isn’t great but it’s hardly the worst journey and there’s buses. That’s a lot of potential custom.

I long to see this building refurbished and brought back in to use..Sadly a lot of pubs are struggling at the moment. As is the hospitality sector in general.
The White Swan as been a part of Charlton Village for decades. It did see its fair share of closures for various reasons over the years. But it will be great see it open again in sine form.
* Some form
I hope it works, but 360k is an ambitious figure to ask for just donations.
Perhaps some kind of shared ownership structure would have a wider appeal?
