A number of towers continue rising around Canary Wharf
A number of towers are rising both in Canary Wharf and the nearby area as the east London skyline changes.
However the changing nature of the area means of the three sites covered today in this post, not one is for financial services. One is a life sciences, one student towers and the other a residential block in a densely packed area at the western end of Marsh Wall.

Firstly, the life sciences block which is the only tower being built by Canary Wharf Group in what is technically Canary Wharf. This is part of a northern expansion of the wider built-up estate.
Floor after floor of lab space will be contained within the tower as Canary Wharf seek to diversify occupants across the area.

Upon completion improved transport links will result between Canary Wharf Elizabeth line station, West India Quay DLR station and Poplar DLR station. A big improvement for people travelling from, say, Silvertown who can exit at Poplar for an easy walk to Canary Wharf rather than having to change for a Lewisham-bound train.

Other plots on the wider North Quay plot will includes thousands of homes alongside commercial and office space.
Student towers
Also visible from the area are three student towers which when complete will be the tallest in the country.
These blocks sit the other side of Billingsgate market close to Blackwall DLR station. Located on a former McDonalds drive-through, the fast food chain will reopen on site when complete. Well you don’t turn down the potential custom from thousands of students living directly above.

In the above image Billingsgate market can also be seen. The City of London plan to close the site and redevelop.
Three student blocks will see a total of 1,672 rooms and 80 flats.
Residential
Finally there’s a residential block now rising named The Bellamy. It’s not the tallest at 104 metres but does have one big things going for it; it’s not bloody grey.
Warm tones on the façade of the rising tower offer a nice contrast to dreary surrounding towers.
There’s a couple more residential blocks that look set to start in this area including a 158 metre student tower a short distance east at 30 Marsh Wall.
Tower Hamlet’s high Community Infrastructure Levy on student building ensures they’re raking it in from these sites and the student housing boom.

Metres away though and no sign of movement at Millharbour beside South Quay DLR station where a coming soon board has been in place for about a decade and counting.
