Greenwich masterplan could add student housing under developer plan
A landowner behind a vast masterplan on Greenwich peninsula is looking at altering the residential mix and add student accommodation and/or co-living units.
Knight Dragon currently have outline planning permission for more than 17,000 homes across much of the site, though progress has been very slow on many plots. In the recent past Greenwich Council and TfL supported pushing back a bus station rebuild from 3,000-home completions to 6,000.
The same condition for a new school was also agreed. In addition a “temporary” car park was given another decade to remain.
Further changes to the masterplan are now proposed with Knight Dragon stating “this minor amendment could allow for circa 1,000 student rooms, or circa 720 co-living rooms in Lower Riverside. This would allow us to diversify our tenure offer at the Peninsula in response to significant local demand.”

Lower Riverside is the section along the east of the peninsula running up to the cable car.
It’s not exactly set the world alight in terms of speed. It took nine years from outline plans to be approved for a detailed application to emerge in 2023 at Plot M0121.
If approved student accommodation and co-living units would result in less income per square metre paid by the developer to Greenwich council.

Still quicker than Convoys Wharf
Must be over 20 years or more since the site be vacant and was earmarked for new housing. Despite Labour going on about the housing crisis. Both Lewisham and Greenwich Council’s sit on planning applications for months or years while sites sit empty and undeveloped.
I am with Tobias we need to see more homes built for people born and bred in Greenwich Borough. So they do not have to be forced to move away from work schools friends family and their support networks..
Greenwich in absolutely no way what so ever needs more student housing!
How about using this supposed planned student housing to build affordable housing for the residents of Greenwich that currently don’t have access to their own home, I know people stacked up in the double digits living in 3 bed flats, because all the housing being built is either for students or being brought out by greedy landlords to then repurpose the housing in to more student housing!
Absolutely Tobias Meaden. I could not agree with you more.
Homes for Greenwich Residents must be the top priority.
