New book covering wonderful green areas of Greenwich now available
A new book has been published looking at green spaces across Greenwich borough including areas away from the well known spots in Greenwich and Blackheath.
Author Candy Blackham spent three years exploring the woods, flowery meadows, parks and nature reserves borough-wide with her camera.
Each site has a brief historical description and photographs which “tempt us to go walking every day of the year as the trees change from bare branches to green leaves, and then the brilliant jewel-like colours of autumn.”
Aside from the greenery there’s wildlife including herons (commonly seen in Thamesmead and Abbey Wood), foxes, many varieties of butterflies and other insects and parakeets.
As the author says: “Both books explore the many varied, and interesting green spaces in these two boroughs, but particularly those which have an historical or design significance.
“In the Borough of Greenwich there are so many more woods, parks and nature reserves to explore than the wonderful Greenwich Park, and in Lewisham there are wonderful river walks and hilltop views.
“The books give information but also aim to tempt people to explore beyond their usual haunts.”
