Parts of former Stratford station entrance demolished for tower
Remaining parts of Stratford former station building have been demolished in advance of a forthcoming tower.
In recent weeks the bulldozers have moved in with work now underway on a 41-floor block.

This is the third construction site for student blocks (at least) in close proximity with the tower set to include a new station entrance.
Another is underway between Stratford station and Stratford High Street DLR station with this pic taken last week.

Another site nearby set to see student blocks was formerly homes to a temporary supermarket and bar.
This is to the north close to Stratford International stations.

Further details on that plot can be seen here.
Long closed
The section of Stratford station just demolished contained an emergency exit and has long been closed – though did see some temporary usage during the 2012 Olympics.
The opening of a new station building in 1999 as part of the Jubilee line extension saw its closure save for that period in 2012.

I was fortunate enough to have a little look around the now-demolished site and will hopefully soon write up a post featuring more about the history of the site including photos.
It’s a pretty historic little bit of a station now gone so I’m happy to have taken a few photos over recent months capturing this slice of early 20th century London being removed.
Hopefully the follow-up post looking far more deeply into the site’s history will be up soon – time permitting.
Student housing company Unite are behind the forthcoming tower plan.

That entrance might have a chance to be reinstated, from the building, it was mentioned by IanVisits
Stratford needs another entrance as it’s still the busiest station in East London. If more new development is to be built then why not include another station access to relieve the bottleneck.
More new development in Stratford whilst the station itself is still suffering with yet more rush hour chaos. But if a new station access is to be built with new development then it should help relieve some of the chaos at Stratford.
Whilst everyone is constantly calling for more entrances and exits, this will not solve the overcrowding at Stratford.
When the platforms are full, it doesn’t matter how many entrances and exits there are, there just simply isn’t room.
Yet, still we build 40+ storey buildings.
It’s ok having people live in the sky, but there’s still not the room for them, when they come down to ground level to wait for a train.
