New leisure centre named Woolwich Waves after public vote
A new leisure centre opening this year in Woolwich has been named Woolwich Waves after a public vote.
Three options were on offer with 3,525 votes cast:
Woolwich Waves – 2340 votes / 66.3%
Woolwich Active – 915 / 26%
MOVE Woolwich – 270 / 7.7%
When complete the centre will feature two swimming pools, water slides, gym, spa, sauna, five-a-side football pitch, sports courts, a creche, soft play and a cafe.
Housing to come
The building sits on the former Viscount House facing General Gordon Square and now almost complete.
Upon opening the existing Waterfront centre will close though the fate of that site remains uncertain. Housing seems by far the most likely though under whose direction remains unknown.

Despite a severe housing crises the council have recently announced they are stepping back from direct council housebuilding.
It could be like the housing component of the new leisure centre where private company Hill will develop homes.

So far not one has begun.
When work does complete bon the residential component behind the new leisure centre the site will see a net gain of 24 new social homes out of 482 in total.
