Development of former Abbey Wood post office now visible from station
A little look now at new homes rising on the former Crown Post Office site in Abbey Wood after raising how few homes have been built around Abbey Wood in the past 15 years.
Despite many years knowing the Elizabeth line was on the way and it now being open more than three years many vacant sites abound near the station despite what Mayor Khan seems to think, but there are some projects underway.

Well ok, not many and this one is pretty small at 30 flats. Looking back through my site it’s now twelve years since plans were first revealed (which could have featured a replacement post office) and then six years since consultation begun on the revised scheme which didn’t.
Greenwich Council now want to sell off a former public toilet block beside the site.

If only they’d have worked with landowners earlier it could have been incorporated within the adjacent site to provide more homes. In isolation the toilet block is really too small to do a great deal.
It’d probably need to be redeveloped alongside the club next door (with a replacement club on site?) and homes above it but that’d again take the council working in a holistic manner.

Anyway images taken from Abbey Wood station also show the former pub garden of the Abbey Arms.
Plans were revealed in March this year and at 38 flats its again pretty small-scale compared to the thousands possible to the north on Peabody and Bexley Council sites.

All greenery has been removed as plans recently remerged to build homes there.
We’ll see what happens.
Council site

Abbey Wood and nearby Thamesmead have hardly been short of plans with the advent of the Elizabeth line be it public land owned by Peabody, public authority land such as Bexley Council’s car park beside the station or private land such as Lyndean industrial estate or the former car wash site.
The problem is very little has ever gone anywhere and even those sites that do get moving, such as 30 flats now underway, take 12 or more years.

I keep wondering why the mayor doesn’t get involved in pushing both Greenwich and Bexley councils to sort out why it takes so long to build anything, I just wonder if the developers are waiting for the price of the land to go up in price and sell it on , which seems the case with the site of the Harrow inn
Khan seems close to Peabody. He was holding Abbey Wood up as some kind of example to set and appears completely ignorant of facts on the ground
