Deptford street changes underway including new cycle lanes

Work is well underway on remodeling a busy Deptford street subject to Thames Tideway construction works in recent years.

Deptford Church Street was a dual carriageway running from Creek Road in the north to Deptford Broadway in the south for some decades before Thames Water commenced construction.

During building works the street was reduced to one lane, with the newly reworked road set to mostly remain one lane in each direction as a cycle lane links up to Cycleway 4 at Creek Road.

Junctions of Deptford Church Street with Coffey Street, Giffin Street and Reginald Road are to see signals at junctions.

Numerous housing developments have risen or planned along the road, with the former Tidemill school converted to housing.

Other developments include the recently submitted plan at Lewisham College.

Plans have also gone in to extend the Bird’s Nest pub creating 28 new homes.

The roundabout outside the pub has been removed with traffic signals to be installed.

Student homes have also been approved at the nearby Art Hub site on Creekside.

A total of 231 student rooms were given the green light last month by Lewisham Council.

Other nearby housing projects include Sun Wharf beside Deptford Creek.

Upon completion of cycle lane works residents will have direct access on entirely segregated routes to Tower Bridge via Rotherhithe and Bermondsey.

  • Can we also mention that they’ve painted fresh lines but the road surface is absolutely destroyed after years of heavy vehicles movement, and driving on it is actually dangerous
