Woolwich student block takes shape

Woolwich is a town where currently turning every corner seemingly reveals something being built, and one such site is a 299-room student block.

The site of this block on Beresford Street was formerly a Catholic Club which sat neglected for many years before construction commenced.

Taken 2023

The student block is set to see a neighbouring unit rise on a vacant site after approval was given for further student rooms.

That will close the gap between Premier Inn and the initial student development.

In the above image we can see the former temporary park on the left. Approval has now been given for 660 homes.

Note also the bus stand with this area seeing buses often holding up traffic including buses approaching from behind. TfL plan a bus lane here but some stands will remain negating a fair bit of usefulness.

Looking from Powis Street

The rising block now appears evident from Powis Street looking down Murray’s Yard.

In between the student block and Powis Street they’ll be a high density development including further student rooms and co-living blocks.

Forthcoming Woolwich student blocks

Totals will be 918 student rooms and 409 co-living rooms to be precise.

This sleepy part of town will be a lot busier in years to come.

  • Good, might help the nighttime economy of Woolwich a bit. Especially even more opens opposite.

  • And still nothing from the Developer, or the Borough’s Planning Department, about the impact on public services, and especially GP provision
