Crumbling Woolwich town centre car park repairs proposed

A crumbling car park in Woolwich town centre is to see repair work after falling into poor condition.

The multi-storey on Calderwood Street is owned by Greenwich Council and sits atop a Sainsbury’s. It’s not in good shape –

Concrete is crumbling in a number of places on the structure which contains 445 spaces.

The top floor is now used by residents at an adjacent block.

That block was formerly the home of Morgan Grampian many moons ago.

The car park hasn’t changed much in feel since those days, and signs like this remain –

Morgan Grampian

In the past Greenwich Council have listed the car park as a possible development site but that’s someway off.

The structure is like stepping 30 years back in time with its signage, lifts and walkways.

Appealing to most it is not, but is has a certain charm.

Back in 2019 when the site was listed on a Site Allocations planning document the council also mentioned other uses before any redevelopment, stating:

“There is also the potential for temporary or “meanwhile” uses of parts of the car parks prior to redevelopment, including food and drink, workspace and/or community/cultural uses.”

Views over Woolwich

It has great views and perhaps one day something akin to  Peckham Levels may appear.

For now though go take a look at this time capsule and Greenwich Council, don’t ditch all the old signs!

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Get rid. Needs to be the start of a better shopping centre in Woolwich.

Waste of money trying to patch it up.

  • Greenwich Council continues to do all it can to ignore their laughable 2030 net zero target. Parking offences in the Borough are continually ignored and pedestrians are an afterthought! Why not waste money on something that’ll be demolished for private ‘apartments’? Profligate and RBG go hand in hand!

  • I thought there was once a proposal to demolish the multi storey car park and build a bigger Sainsburys store with new homes above. The multi storey car park is in a eal state of disrepair.
