Long-delayed Deptford housing scheme at Neptune Wharf now underway
Work has finally commenced on the construction of 199 homes in Deptford at a site on Grinstead Road after years of delay.
Galliard Homes are behind the project at Neptune Wharf.
It’s almost 10 years since plans were approved for the site on 30th March 2012. Not much happened until 2021.
The site is visible in red on the aerial image below:
One end abuts the lines into London Bridge and Deptford Park is just over the road.
Arches under rail lines are due to be opened-up.
The plot is close to the former Grand Surrey Canal which was progressively filled-in during the 1960s and 1970s.
Nowadays many rue that decision. Oddly, in Thamesmead authorities appear to want to do the same to what remains of the historic Royal Arsenal canal – or Broadwater Dock – as this extract from a Greenwich Council report shows:
If it happens people in future will wonder what they were paying at.
Other projects now well underway in Deptford include housing at the former Tidemill school site and another plot on Creekside opposite the Bird’s Nest pub.
I understand the DPLN (Deptford Parks Livable Neighbourhood) group were trying to get the former canal towpath (which still exists as a right of way, albeit inaccesible) incorporated into this scheme. I runs on the lower red line of your box continuing to the main road on the right, squeezing between the apartments and industrial estate.
Does anyone know if this is going ahead?
