New Thamesmead development consultations in coming week

Peabody plans aerial 2

A couple of events are scheduled shortly covering Peabody’s large scale development plans for Thamesmead. And not before time – plans for Southmere Village and Harrow Manorway have been dragging on for years now. One crucial element will be the main road linking north Thamesmead to Abbey Wood station. The opening of Sainsbury’s, and installation of a roundabout plus two new traffic lights has slowed the road down.

This will increasingly affect buses in coming years unless the road is widened to include bus lanes in each direction. There’s plenty of space to do so on either side of the road. I’ve said before that many Thamesmead residents wont benefit from 15-20 minute faster journeys on Crossrail if buses to the station are slowed down by around the same amount of time due to increased traffic, which thousands of new homes along the route could well induce.

Harrow manorway sainsburys cafe

The poor quality shot on the left was taken from the Sainsburys cafe. This road was pretty much always free flowing until recently. Though not gridlocked there has been a marked increase in queues.

The buildings on the right are being vacated for demolition.

The area on the left is Cross Quarter stage 2. It was announced yesterday that the site was purchased by developers HUB, who are planning ‘hundreds’ of homes on the site.

Back to Peabody’s plans, and here’s what’s happening:

Southmere Village Design Workshop – Thursday 3 December

6.30pm – 8pm at The Link Thamesmead (Belvedere Road, Thamesmead, SE2 9BS)
Join the design team for a focused discussion on Southmere Village, looking at materials, shops and community facilities and what you’d like to see in the proposed new public square. This discussion will feed into the final designs. Please contact Paul Fowler (paul.fowler@peabody.org.uk; 0207 021 4150) for more information and to book your place.

South Thamesmead Neighbourhood Forum – Thursday 10 December
6.30pm – 8.30pm at Emmanuel Baptist Church (Yarnton Way, DA18 4DR)
The design team will be in attendance to update on our plans for Southmere Village and Harrow Manorway and outline how input from the consultation so far has been taken on board. The South Thamesmead Neighbourhood Forum is held bi-monthly and is open to all. For more details contact Alex Forrester (AForrester@trust-thamesmead.co.uk; 020 8320 4470)

Running a site alone takes time and a fair bit of money. Adverts are far from enough to cover it and my living costs as a private renter.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.
