Greenwich town centre cycle lane: Consultation commences

Work to plug a gap in Cycleway 4 in the heart of Greenwich town centre has taken a step forward with consultation underway.

Plans were revealed some time ago with a new route from Creek Road heading along Norway Street then Thames Street and Welland Street through Meridian Estate.

Route would head through this area

Then it’d turn to run a few metres along Greenwich Church Street before heading along College Approach towards the Old Royal Naval College site.

College Approach would see a segregated cycle lane installed.

College Approach

At the end of College Approach the route turns north for a short distance towards Cutty Sark Gardens.

Much of the proposed route would not be segregated from general traffic, with double yellow lines being extended.

College Approach plan

Connecting from Cutty Sark Gardens to existing lanes in east Greenwich will be via the narrow Thames-side path given the University grounds are closed at night and for events.

This latest consultation follows another undertaken in early 2025. Back then the timeline suggested work should be underway by now.

Full length plan

An existing lane named Cycleway 4 currently runs from central London to the very edge of Greenwich just over Deptford Creek.

Route from central London to Greenwich

Another stretch of Cycleway 14 then runs from east Greenwich to Charlton. The very latest section to open is from Charlton almost as far as Woolwich, which was covered recently.

In recent days the Murky Depths has covered progress currently seen in Woolwich at the planned eastern extremity (for now) at the Woolwich ferry roundabout.

Area in Charlton were covered around two weeks ago.

Back in September Southwark Council announced an area around Rotherhithe would be made permanent, which was also covered on this site.

Woolwich town centre

The Charlton to Woolwich stretch is projected to finish in 2027 when work in Woolwich begin linking the ferry to existing lanes from Woolwich to Plumstead.

That’s a rather odd stretch which TfL plan to have going the long way around Woolwich town centre through busy town centre streets.

Woolwich cycle lane plan

The quicker and more logical route would be along Woolwich high Street and then Beresford Street.

Instead they want cyclist to go through MacBean Street between the shops with outside displays, shoppers on the pedestrianised stretch of street as well as cars entering the Lidl car park.

Both roads which aren’t seeing a lane are lined with new builds which could have assisted in funding. Aside from being poor to use when on a bike they’re both pretty dismal on foot and sever the town centre from the Thames and new housing.

Few street improvements planned for most users here

Bus users too get the joy of bus stops being blocked by poor parking on a regular basis.

Still, no substantive plans at all have yet to emerge to make this area better for users or link the town centre with the river. Note the word substantive. A bit of paint on the road as mentioned a year ago isn’t really good enough.
