Woolwich Central latest: Blocks on the rise at both phases
In recent months a town centre residential block has become ever more apparent as part of the Woolwich Central project beside General Gordon Square.
As part of a wider 712-home project, the block in front of Tesco has been approaching its final 13-floors in height.
Yet despite being the most visible element – and labelled phase three – more homes are to be built behind Tesco in phase four.

These blocks are beside Grand Depot Road and John Wilson Street to the south. Three blocks in total will be built.
Phases one and two comprise the Tesco supermarket and existing homes built by Tesco subsidiary Spenhill in a project which started around twenty years ago.

That saw Greenwich Council sell their former HQ at Peggy Middleton House. In return the Woolwich Centre including offices and a library was built.
Tesco failed to build phases three and four then sold the sites to Meyer Homes in 2015. Land was then sold to London Square and work commenced.

For many years phase three became a temporary green space. So long in fact some thought it was supposed to be permanent, which was understandable given the length of time.
Commercial space will be located on the ground floor at phase three.

Nearby development begins

Work is now underway on a further 557 homes to the rear of that site on what was formerly a car park, garages, pub, shops and Troy Court homes.

The next big Woolwich site that should begin is TfL’s Place for London and Berkeley Homes joint venture above the eastern end of the Woolwich Elizabeth line station box.
A total of 525 homes are approved there.
