Woolwich Central development on General Gordon Square now rising

A new block of housing long planned beside General Gordon Square is now rising after twenty years.

The third and fourth phases of Woolwich Central either side of earlier phases which included the large Tesco supermarket built around 15 years ago.

Now rising

Tesco once planned a taller block via their development subsidiary Spenhill.

Perission was granted but no construction followed.

Permission granted in 2007 but never built

Tesco eventually gave up and sold a number of sites to Meyer Homes including Woolwich.

A far better tower design followed.

Not built

That was seen as too tall for its location. I’ve always thought it a shame some of the riverside towers in Woolwich lacked design as good as this.

After revision, the current design was approved and is now rising.

As seen from General Gordon Square

London Square are now the site’s developers and have twenty years and two landowners who did little, it’s now on the up.

Completion of this block is expected around 2028 and overall both phase three and phase four to the react of Tesco will total 712 homes.

  • Anything that helps obscure that dreadful Tesco monstrosity is very welcome. It’s just a pity the new development looks so drab and miserable. Normal for Woolwich, I guess.

  • It’s funny, I’m one of the few who actually like the Tesco development! The tower however is totally out-of-place no matter how good the design. But you’re right, those Berkeley riverside towers recently finished are just hideous, the sort of place you’d only choose to live so you didn’t have to look at them!

  • Thanks for post. I hadn’t kept track and was still worried what was going up was going to be the 27 storeys or so planned by Meyer Homes.

  • I do mind the tower being built there. If they keep.to.plans the tower will look nice.
It will also be convenient for young professionals and commuters being close to Woolwich Arsenal rail and DLR Stations and a short walk from the Woolwich Elizabeth Line Station.
It’ is also very close to the New Wave Leisure Centre, The Tramshed. Woolwich Works, local shops and amenities..
