Woolwich town centre building could be converted into flats

A building in Woolwich town centre at 35-37 Market Street beside a former police station could be converted into housing.

The owners are seeking to include six flats within the building. It was last in use as a solicitors if Google streetview is any guide.

It’s a building I’d long expected to be rebuilt given it’s of little architectural value and sits beside the former police station, which is twice as high which would offer potential scope for a slightly taller structure.

A new build would also provide a better frontage onto Calderwood Street rather than a grey wall but alas, it doesn’t seem to be on the cards.

The former police station next door is an impressive building which closed in 2014 as part of wide-ranging program of cuts. It dates from 1910 and now sees 19 flats.

A far larger scheme in the area is the Island site, though it’s moved nowhere since first being approved many years ago. I know it’s very much groundhog day when I cover Woolwich development sites but they pretty much all seem to move (or not) at an incredibly slow pace.

  • I thought the building if not demolished completely would of had additional floors added to provide some additional flats
