Charing Cross station and street changes revealed

Plans to change parts of Charing Cross station and the surrounding area have been unveiled.

Consultation has commenced for the proposal which includes the building above Charing Cross station as well as Villiers Street between the Strand and Embankment.

Villiers Street

Also included is the route beneath Charing Cross station near Embankment tube station as well as the connection between the railway station and Hungerford Bridge.

The building currently above the station dates from the 1980s and saw some of the former roof demolished. That was a replacement for a previous roof which collapsed in 1906.

Much of the 1980s Terry Farrell-designed post-modern structure will be retained, though the facade along Villiers Street will change substantially. The hotel in front of the station will not be removed.

Two events are to be held in coming days at the Clermont Hotel, in the Adam Suite on:

  • Wednesday 25th March 4-7:30pm
  • Thursday 26th March 4-7:30pm

Zero character, as bland and unexciting as the faceless blocks that surround Liverpool Street station. While the far tunnels could do with a bit of a spruce up, there was something joyous in the chaotic mish-mash of period styles so close together. Still, it will match the equally bland ‘upgrade’ at the top of Charing Cross road, so there’s consistency in this mediocrity.

  • A new access to Charing Cross station from Villiers Street is a good idea especially when you are coming from the Strand and Embankment and you want to access Charing Cross station. Without having to use the main entrance at Charing Cross or from Hungerford Bridge and via Embankment tube station. I think that a new side entrance from Villiers Street is a great idea.

    • There already is a side entrance, via stairs and escalators.
As far as I can see, it’s just being given a makeover.

  • A new way to get in and out of Charing Cross via Villiers Street with escalators and lifts does seem like a good idea. Perhaps it should have been done ages ago or when Charing Cross station was having an overhaul.

Where about’s is Villiers Street. Is it close to the Strand and Aldwych or near to the Strand and Aldwych. That the Piccadilly Line used to run a shuttle service from Holborn to Aldwych and the Jubilee Line once ran from Charing Cross to Green Park.

@Train Enthusiast: ‘Where about’s is Villiers Street.’ Instead of walking down the steps, do a right and head for the short flights of escalators. I go to Embankment station from Charing Cross station on a regular basis, and am glad that I don’t have to creep down those steep stairs on rickety legs with steps swimming before my dodgy eyesight.
