Restaurant plan submitted for former Woolwich bank site

An application has been made to convert a former Halifax bank on Powis Street into a restaurant.

Halifax closed their Woolwich branch in October 2025. Last year I covered the site being up for rent at £102,250 a year.

Former bank unit on Powis Street. Recent public realm upgrade not wearing well

The application covers the entire building with “change of use of basement, ground, first and second floors from bank to restaurant.”

According to a covering letter within the application the restaurant would have seating at both ground and first floors.

The basement would be used for back of house facilities with staff facilities at second floor level.

So what you and I want to know is what the restaurant is? Unfortunately there is no mention, though clearly someone is interested. I’ll keep an eye out as soon as news emerges I will cover it.

The application is from Pyrke Planning. If you have any clue drop me an email at fromthemurkydepths@gmail.com

  • Thanks for the update. It will be interesting to know who will open a restaurant on the site of the okd Halifax bank.
If planning permission granted it might ho to improve the night tine economy in Woolwich which the Council are keen to see

  • Perhaps Gökyüzü or Wingstop?

Wingstop has been expanding rapidly, there is clearly a demand for chicken restaurants with KFC and Popeye already in the town centre. Apparently they have launched some multi-storey restaurants as well. But I think the kitchen would be on the same floor as the restaurant.

Gökyüzü has quite a few restaurants in outer London already. It’s also a predominantly sit-in restaurant which would fit with a basement kitchen. Plus there is no existing similar restaurant (unless you count kebab shops) so good potential to do well?

  • I’m guessing a major fast food chain, no independent restaurant could afford the rent or fitout especially with uncertain demand. I’d think McDonald’s if their current site wasn’t so significant to them, so perhaps KFC will move from their current low-volume location?

It Would be great if it were someone like
Gökyüzü (as per Sacha post.). I always thought the Council missed a trick when a Turkish restaurant tried a planning attempt at the old Dunkin’ donuts site across the street. They requested a few outside tables in the alleyway during summer and got blanked. Ended up with another trainer shop.
