Crayford gasholder in line for demolition

Another gasholder could be demolished as plans have been submitted for a site in Crayford.

SGN have applied to Bexley Council for the removal of now-defunct gasholders on Old Road. The site currently includes two gas holders with one above ground and one below. According to the application it was opened in 1852 as the West Kent Gasworks and included 3 other
gasholders removed by the 1960s.

It’s the latest in a long line with a nearby gasholder in Belvedere seeing plans for 400 homes from SGN and Bellway.

No housing plans have yet emerged for Crayford but that seems a likely outcome in future.

Other sites with plans include Rotherhithe where housing plans emerged in 2024. In 2023 proposals for 700 homes were revealed for a gasholder near the Old Kent Road.

Another SGN site that is to see housing can be seen in Lower Sydenham. Greenwich’s last gasholder has also now been removed.

However not all have been demolished with some being incorporated within redevelopment, as seen at King’s Cross.
