Woolwich student block tops out – with more on the way

A student housing block in Woolwich town centre has topped out, in a development that marks the first in a number that will change the town.

The block is located on the site of a former Catholic Club totalling 299 rooms with other student blocks set to follow.

One is directly next door with 120 rooms located between this plot and the Premier Inn, while a short stroll north sees Greenwich Council’s former block at Riverside House which they sold rather than use to help alleviate their own housing crises.

That is to see external changes alongside an extension providing a hotel and student housing (300 rooms).

In between the two is a site at Beresford Street and Macbean Street. That has plans for 918 student rooms.

It’s another public plot sold off at the former Woolwich Poly school site and now vacant for around 15 years.

In total 1,637 student rooms are proposed in a relatively small part of Woolwich town centre.

Whether they actually all become occupied by students is another matter. It wouldn’t be in the realms of impossibility that some become home to those living in temporary accommodation, much as hotels are often used.

Just last week Wandsworth council agreed to move 186 households from temporary accommodation to a hotel under construction. The same happening with the glut of student blocks and co-living units (similar to student blocks for those past full time education) could happen.
