One dead after collision between cycle and car in Greenwich

A collision between a car and cycle this afternoon has injured two and seen the death of a man.

The incident on Creek Road occurred around the bridge across Deptford Creek on the boundary of Deptford and Greenwich.

The London Ambulance Service stated they were called at “4.07pm to reports of a car in collision with a cyclist in Creek Road, SE8.

“We sent resources including ambulance crews, incident response officers and advanced paramedic practitioners.

“We treated two people and took one man to hospital. Sadly, despite our best efforts, a second man was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Bus routes 188 and 199 are on diversion. TfL state:

“CREEK ROAD, Greenwich: buses on diversion in both directions due to a collision. Buses are missing stops from Yeoman Street to Greenwich Station (L) towards Catford and stops from Greenwich High Road / Roan Street (H) to Yeoman Street towards Canada Water.”

  • they was so keen to put in a bike lane in ,there isn’t enough room for two lorry’s to pass on the bridge without pulling there mirrors in, you have to cross the bike lane to get to the bus stop, you cant do a left turn out of Waitrose so they drive into Norman road and do a u turn, and half the cyclist don’t bother to use the bike lane anyway, it was only a matter of time before there was an accident

    • Keen to put it in because it has reduced cycling accidents. Those who get into accidents are the ones running red lights and crossings at the junction.

It would be even safer if they could continue the cycle path behind on thames street and welland street, so cyclists dont have to cross the junction.

The issue is the lack of space going west leading to the junction and need to cut across traffic to get into the cycle lane for the lights. Need to extend the cycle path from the Greenwich one way up to this junction, would make a big difference.

  • Details are very sparse on what happened here but everyone should note that this sort of report is much rarer BECAUSE we have a cycle lane. Only someone who ignores reality would say a bike lorry incident is caused by a bike lane. Completely bizarre the small minority who pedal (pun) their view everyone should risk their lives to get to work so they can, checks notes, see no difference to their lives whatsoever.

  • Very sorry to hear this and thoughts are with the friends and family of the victim. I cycle across that junction regularly, one problem is that the lights controlling Norman Road / waitrose give little or no advance time for cyclists so you are competing with traffic trying to turn right across the junction from waitrose, those doing a U turn and traffic coming out of the tiny side street onto Norman Road. Quite often there I wait for the pedestrian lights and walk across then as this seems safer. very sad.

  • The driver had a cardiac episode and lost control of the car. The bike had nothing to do with it, was just bad luck. The deceased was the driver, and it is likely he was deceased before the collision happened. The cyclist did not suffer major injuries.

So in this case, nothing to do with the cyclist/cycle lane/any of that.
