Woolwich Equitable pub back on the market
A Woolwich town centre pub is back on the market after closing in 2023 due to rent arrears.
The pub was a number operated by Antic in south east London which have closed. Others include Suttons Radio in Lewisham while Eltham’s GPO was taken over by another operator.
The pub is now up for rent at £75,000 a year.
UPDATE: A sale price of £1.5 million has been added.
Located within the former Woolwich Building Society HQ on General Gordon Square the pub was one of, if not the best in Woolwich.
Decent food, quiz nights, good DJs and live music plus a reasonable drinks choice. It ticked most of the boxes. Hopefully someone takes it on to rekindle what it had.
The failure of the pub ironically came during the time funds from the Mayor were given to improve Woolwich nightlife.
The building currently has a temporary market outside while a £25 million project is underway across Woolwich covering Beresford Square, Powis Street and shopfront improvements.
Antic also plan another Woolwich pub with numerous plans coming and going over a period of 10 years. The most recent in autumn 2023.
However the proposed site at the western end of Powis Street has far less footfall than the Equitable. If it ever opens will it last longer than the group’s others in the area?
I really hope another operator takes on the equitable…The Youngs umbrella hold sway in the Arsenal on the food front…Salt is good but limited in menu. Step out into real Woolwich and pubs where you can order reasonable food are sadly lacking.
The equitable was good for food, quiz nights and live music. A decent atmosphere and crowd prior to Covid.
Best of all it’s a great space in a wonderful building.
Let’s hope a new owner can be found
to take over the Equitable pub. In a central location close to public transport this pub would be very popular. If the new owners operate the business usiing a similar module as the previous owners. The Equitable will be great pub in the heart of Woolwich.
